The Garden Route

One of the most popular destinations in South Africa

The Garden Route is one of the most popular destinations in South Africa, and you yourself can choose where to stop along the route and for how long. If you like, you can ride ostriches at one of the farms in Oudtshoorn or simply watch an ostrich race. You can walk in the Cango Caves, or if you’re feeling more adventurous you can crawl through its narrowest tunnels, a mere 29 cms wide. You can stroke wild cats, or go down in a cage to watch crocodiles at the Cango Wildlife Ranch. Fans of extreme sports can do a Bungee jump from the highest bridge – 216 m. But those less brave can swing along on the ropeway as Tarzan on one of the Canopy Tours. Other options include morning and evening safaris either on horseback or in a jeep; cage diving with white sharks; walking with lions; riding elephants; observing the way meerkats (mongooses) live; visiting an exotic bird reserve or the nursery of wild, but very cute monkeys … and that is not all. Relax on a warm beach on the Indian Ocean, taste oysters, take a champagne cruise on a lagoon, play golf, surf, dive (have you ever dived with seals?). You can have all this at Mossel Bay, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. You can walk in the fantastic tropical forest of Tsitsikamma (80 km), the first national ocean reserve in Africa where you will see wild beaches, quiet coves, the most beautiful waterfalls and the magnificent rocky coastline. In the small town of Hermanus, from June to September, you can see whales, the largest mammals in the world, swimming up and down the coast as they prepare for their long journey south. You can take a whale cruise or watch them from the shore.
